Ways to join the GFC team

Postdoctoral Researcher:

We typically hire postdocs through the annual competition for the KIPAC postdoctoral program, which has a deadline in early November of each year. Interested candidates should also consider applying to the Stanford Science Fellowship and national fellowships. Current graduate students or postdocs at external institutions who are interested in working with the group should feel free to email Risa with interest, and should also consider requesting to give a KIPAC talk and contacting current postdocs and research scientists in the group to learn more about our activities.

Graduate researcher:

Current/Incoming Stanford Graduate Student (Rotation)

If you are a current/incoming Stanford graduate student interested in doing a rotation, send me an email, or drop by my group meetings. These meetings are currently Mondays at 3pm on campus in PAB 232; all KIPAC members and Stanford students are welcome!

Visiting Graduate Students

Graduate students at other institutions who are interested in joining us for a period of 3-12 months to work on specific collaborative projects (generally, related to DESI and/or Rubin/LSST, or related AI/ML, theory, or simulations) can apply through the DOE SCGSR Program (contact Risa directly before applying). There are occasionally additional opportunities for visiting students through other programs.

Prospective Stanford Graduate Student

If you are a prospective Stanford graduate student, please apply through the Stanford Physics Department (generally in mid-December of each year) and also look at the KIPAC opportunities. In a typical year, we are able to take on one new graduate student in the group. Unfortunately, given the number of queries, Risa is not able to meet directly with most students before they apply. It's possible some of the current GFC students will have time to chat with you! Students are not admitted to the Stanford PhD program off-cycle of the regular admissions season.

Stanford Undergraduate Researcher:

If you are a Stanford undergraduate interested in doing research with the group, send Risa an email to ask about possibilities and also fill out this form. Please include information about your past research experience, what year you are, and some information about your computing skills. We usually take on 1-2 students each summer through the Stanford Physics Summer Research Program, and consider taking students with some coding experience during the academic year.

Undergraduate Researcher (not at Stanford):

Undergraduate students from other institutions who are interested in summer research can apply through one of the following programs: SLAC SULICAMPARE (for students in California State Universities and Community Colleges), or SR-EIP/Leadership Alliance.  We are not currently taking on any non-Stanford students outside of these three programs.

Pre-College Students:

We do not have room for pre-college students in the group at this time. Some examples of opportunities available for high-school students at Stanford are listed here. If you are interested in learning more about astrophysics, we encourage you to sign up for KIPAC's outreach mailing list; see here. Very occasionally, opportunities for pre-college students open up. If you'd like to be considered/notified in this case, please feel free to fill out this form with your contact information. We cannot promise to reply, but we will look here if and when opportunities arise.
